I stumbled across the Vimas Technologies WAV Recording Applet SDK today - it's a simple java app that embeds in a webpage (http://www.vimas.com/wav.php). This is pretty close to what I'm looking for. Has any one tried this application - or can you recommend a similar application?

Thanks for the reply. I downloaded and played a bit with Audacity. It looks like a powerful program. Do you know of any very simple / bare bones applications that can be launched from a browser? Like a browser plugin that allows one to record a voice snippet, play it back, accept it, or re-record it...
